Douro Estuary Local Nature Reserve
(RNLED)
Some of the things we saw on the way...
In the 1st image we can see a landslide of clayey, impermeable and rich soil.
This is a demonstration of the power of nature, and the lack of trees only helps.
A fountain was created near the site to prevent it from happening again.
If you thought that this plant that we see everywhere should be here, you are very wrong!
The willow (Carpobrotus edulis) is an invasive plant that should be eliminated as it harms the fauna and flora typical of the dunes.
This plant species, after being introduced, spread radically along practically the entire Portuguese coast and it also does not help to support the dunes, due to the fact that its roots are superficial.
Here we can see some shells of molluscs that were in the river, and since this being lives in the shalow areas of the river, they ended up being dragged to this place by the water.
The shells, as they are made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) capture CO2, which is good for us as this gas can cause several negative impacts.
Anthropogenic activities only continue to increase the concentration of this gas in the atmosphere, even after various agreements and conventions on climate change have been made.
